How can you tackle brittle hair?

Shiny, supple, radiant: hair is one of your most beautiful assets. However, over time, it can become more fragile. Loss of softness, brittle ends, and dull lengths are all signs of a suffering hair fiber. With the right actions combined with a suitable routine, you can strengthen it, fight against brittle hair, and regain radiant, soft, and resilient lengths.

Why does hair become brittle?

The hair fiber is protected by an outer envelope called the cuticle. Made of fine scales, it protects the cortex, which gives the hair its color and strength. When these scales are smooth and well-joined, they reflect light: hair is soft, supple, and radiant. On the other hand, when the intercellular cement no longer plays its role, the scales lift. Your lengths become rougher and duller, the protection of the cortex decreases, and your hair becomes brittle.

External causes

Many factors can weaken the hair fiber. Heating appliances (hair dryers, straighteners, or curling irons) expose hair to high temperatures that can alter its structure. Coloring, bleaching, or chemical treatments also modify the hair's natural balance.

More discreet but very frequent, external aggressions such as pollution, UV rays, and friction against clothing or your pillow also weaken the intercellular cement that holds the scales together. The cuticle opens, and the fiber then loses its natural protection.

Internal causes

The beauty of your hair also depends on your body's internal balance. Certain nutritional deficiencies, a lack of hydration, but also stress can weaken the hair fiber, as well as your scalp. Your hair loses density, becomes thinner, and more vulnerable. You may also lose it. Thus, taking care of your hair also means taking care of yourself.

How to recognize brittle hair vs hair loss?

It is not always easy to distinguish breakage from hair loss, yet the mechanisms are very different.

Falling out is part of the hair's natural life cycle. Each fiber grows, lives, and then falls out to make room for a new one. When a hair falls out, a white bulb is usually seen at its end. Losing hair is normal, but if you notice an acceleration of hair loss or if it is localized, stay tuned to your body. Stress, fatigue, and dietary imbalance weaken the hair.

Breakage, however, occurs along the length. The hair breaks before the root, usually in the most weakened areas like the ends or those subject to repeated friction. A simple clue: if you find hair fragments on your clothes, pillows, or brush, it is likely breakage. In this case, your priority is to strengthen and fortify your scalp and lengths, and to smooth the scales to restore your hair's resistance.

Good habits to limit breakage on a daily basis

Fragile hair requires special attention, but a few simple steps can already make all the difference.

Washing: frequency and gentle techniques

First step of an anti-breakage routine: a gentle wash. Prefer a shampoo with a mild cleansing base, without sulfate or silicone. Use it once or twice a week, massaging the scalp with the pads of your fingers to stimulate microcirculation and create a sense of well-being. Then let the foam slide naturally down your lengths during rinsing without rubbing them. This is usually enough to clean the fiber while respecting its balance.

Detangling without breakage

Brushing and detangling are the most critical moments for fragile hair. After washing, apply a repairing/detangling treatment to your towel-dried lengths. You will smooth the scales and make brushing easier. Then brush your hair starting from the ends and gradually moving up. This simple action limits the tension exerted on the fiber to preserve the integrity of the lengths.

Errors to absolutely avoid

Certain habits can increase breakage. If you have noticed that your hair is brittle, avoid brushing it when it is soaking wet, as the hair fiber is more fragile then. Similarly, overly tight elastics or hairstyles that are pulled too tight can exert excessive tension on the lengths. Also, remember to protect your hair from the heat of styling tools with suitable treatments such as Leave-in Detangling Hair Milk or the Intense Nutrition Leave-in Hair Care Hair Prodigieux®.

Which active ingredients should be prioritized to strengthen the hair fiber?

To combat brittle hair and restore strength, suppleness and shine, you can count on several active ingredients:

Hyaluronic Acid

The best approach is to use a combination of high and low molecular weight hyaluronic acids. High molecular weight Hyaluronic Acid forms a hydrating film that smoothes the cuticle and limits water loss. With the Hydra-Plumping Hair and Scalp Concentrated Serum, your hair is smoother, shinier, and better able to resist external aggressions. Low molecular weight Hyaluronic Acid reinforces hydration and promotes the suppleness of your hair. Our Duo of Hyaluronic Acids also hydrates the scalp, an essential step for strengthening your lengths.

Amla extract

An Ayurvedic treasure, Amla is particularly rich in vitamin C, a natural antioxidant. Revitalized and strengthened, your hair is more resistant to breakage. This active ingredient also helps improve hair density: your hair is thicker but also shinier.

Fermented Pink Camellia Oil

At the heart of the Hair Prodigieux® collection, this precious oil is inspired by an ancestral beauty secret. For centuries, pink camellia oil has been used in Japan to enhance hair. The Nuxe laboratory uses pink camellia oil whose powers have been boosted by fermentation. This process enriches the oil with active molecules and improves its affinity with the hair fiber. It is twice as nourishing and repairing as non-fermented oil.

Jojoba oil

Jojoba oil is particularly interesting. Mainly composed of omega-9 fatty acid esters, it has a very good affinity with both skin and hair. Thanks to its sebum-regulating properties, it helps maintain the balance of the scalp. It nourishes without weighing hair down, enhancing your lengths.

Castor oil

Castor oil is very rich in ricinoleic acid. It nourishes brittle hair, strengthens it, and helps it defend against external aggressions thanks to its vitamin E and omega-6 (linoleic acid) content.

Shea butter

A plant treasure known for its nourishing properties, shea butter is particularly rich in fatty acids as well as vitamins A and E. It nourishes dry and damaged hair, repairs the hair fiber, and acts as a protective shield that helps prevent the appearance of split ends. Your hair is stronger, soft, and supple.

Panthenol (provitamin B5)

An essential active ingredient in hair cosmetics, panthenol transforms into vitamin B5 upon contact with the hair (or skin). It is a small molecule capable of hydrating your hair. The hair fiber is thus more resistant. Panthenol also coats the hair, promoting detangling.
