Sun protection: everything you need to know about SPFs and textures

When the sun shines, it is hard to resist the urge to enjoy its warm caress. Good news: with the right protection and the right habits, it can remain a gentle moment for your skin. To ensure your protection always rhymes with sensoriality, textures play a key role. On sunny days, every prolonged exposure to the sun can weaken your skin: sun protection is essential! SPF is a reliable benchmark for adjusting your protection to all situations.

SPF stands for “Sun Protection Factor”. You may also come across the French version “FPS” for “Facteur de Protection Solaire”. It is an index that measures a formula’s ability to filter UVB rays, the ultraviolet rays responsible for sunburn. The higher the number, the stronger the protection: 

• An SPF 30 blocks about 97% of UVB rays.

• An SPF 50 blocks about 98% of UVB rays.

• An SPF 50+ blocks about 98.3% of UVB rays.

Some of our SPF 30, 50 or 50+ formulas also protect against blue light which causes cellular damage⁽¹⁾, accelerates skin photo-aging.

In theory, if your skin turns red after 5 minutes, an SPF 30 allows you to stay in the sun for 150 minutes (30 x 5) before the first redness. With an SPF 50, protection lasts for 250 minutes (5 x 50). With SPF 50+ sunscreens, the index exceeds 60: you have at least 300 minutes (5 x 60) before you see your skin turn red.

Unfortunately, SPF is not a promise of unlimited exposure. The amount of product, perspiration, swimming, friction… all of this influences the quality of your protection. Apply your sunscreen generously, every two hours, or after every swim in the sea or intense effort that requires you to towel off. 

The right SPF is the one that suits your skin type AND the intensity of the sunlight. 

Very sun-sensitive skin:

• Low sunlight (stroll in the fresh air in spring or on a summer morning): SPF 30 or 50;

• Medium sunlight (beach, hiking in the sun): SPF 50+;

• Strong sunlight (on glaciers or in the tropics): SPF 50+;

Sensitive skin:

• Low sunlight: SPF 15, 20, 25;

• Medium sunlight: SPF 30 or 50;

• Strong sunlight: SPF 50+.

Slightly sensitive skin:

• Low sunlight: SPF 6 or 10;

• Medium sunlight: SPF 15, 20, 25;

• Strong sunlight: SPF 30-50.

Less sensitive skin:

• Low sun intensity: SPF 6 or 10;

• Medium sun intensity: SPF 6 or 10;

• High sun intensity: SPF 15, 20, 25.

These recommendations come from the ANSM (National Agency for the Safety of Medicines and Health Products). Moreover, it is always better to wear an SPF 50 or 50+ even if your skin would allow you to use a lower index. When it comes to sun protection, you can never do too much!
