How does self-tanning mousse work?

The magic ingredient for tanning without sun exposure is dihydroxyacetone, better known as DHA. When it comes into contact with skin cells, or rather the amino acids they contain, this active ingredient creates a brown pigment. This is known as the Maillard reaction.
