Estrogens and progestins can interfere with melanocyte receptors involved in melanogenesis. Melanocytes then become more reactive to UV rays, increasing the risk of dark spots.

• Skin lesions

An injury or an inflamed blemish can leave a mark on the skin: this is known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. This localized inflammation triggers local melanin production as a defense mechanism. This pigmentation may persist over time.
