How does the skin evolve over time?

Comment évolue la peau au fil du temps ?

A genuine protective barrier between the body and the external environment, the skin is a vital organ made up of three layers of tissue: the epidermis, dermis and hypodermis.

It is made up of major cells that guarantee its proper functioning, as well as its outward appearance. Skin is a reflection of the passage of time, and with age, the renewal of its major cells slows down: it becomes thinner, dehydrates more quickly, becomes slacker and the first signs of aging appear.

Skin aging is a complex process that depends not only on the genetics of each individual, but also on a number of external factors linked to our environment and lifestyle. And with good reason: dermatologists estimate that 80% of aging is linked to these external factors!

The skin's aging process begins as early as age 20, and collagen, the essential molecule that supports and firms the skin, declines by 1% per year. As we age, the signs of aging set in and become increasingly visible.

The different stages of skin aging

  • Around age 30, the skin begins to show small wrinkles and fine lines on the forehead and at the corners of the eyes: these are the famous frown lines and crow's feet. Fine lines may also appear around the mouth.

  • At age 40, the skin's major support proteins (collagen, elastin, etc.) continue to break down. Skin loses firmness and elasticity, expression lines deepen and become more pronounced around the forehead, eyes and lips. There is also a progressive change in facial volumes.

  • From the age of 50, skin ageing accelerates, amplified by the menopause. Hormones are the signals that keep the skin alert, ensuring its regeneration and density. Cell renewal slows down, and the skin begins to look thinner. We can also lose up to 30% of our collagen in the 5 years following menopause. This results in visible sagging and drooping of the skin, particularly around the oval of the face and eyelids, and increasingly deep and pronounced wrinkles. There is also an increase in the number of pigmentation spots, especially in areas exposed to UV light.

  • After the age of 60, all the signs of aging become more pronounced. Cell regeneration continues to slow down, the synthesis of nourishing and protective lipids declines sharply, and microcirculation becomes rarer. Skin becomes thinner and thinner, drier and more fragile, and the complexion dulls.

Consequently, taking proper care of your skin with skincare products adapted to its type and needs is fundamental to preventing premature aging and preserving its beauty.
