Cellulite: most of us suffer with it at some point and most of us hate it when we do. Seeing those unsightly dimples across our thighs, bums and tums are enough to make any of us feel self conscious, and that bit less body-confident. Fortunately, it’s not something we have to put up with - follow on to find out what cellulite is, why we get it and most importantly some easy ways to lessen its appearance.
So, what is cellulite?
Despite the fact almost 90% of women suffer with cellulite, there are many misconceptions and disagreements about its cause. Contrary to popular belief, it’s not generally caused by excess fat - even people with a healthy diet and lifestyle, including athletes and models can still experience cellulite.
Cellulite tends to develop post-puberty and worsens with age. When circulation and lymphatic movement decrease, toxins build up and the fibres that connect the layers of the skin together break down. The fibres lose elasticity, pulling the skin down which pushes fat upwards - this causes the dimpled effect associated with cellulite. There are number of factors that can also increase the visibility of cellulite - for example as toxins continue to accumulate as we age, we can experience water retention which leads to further bulging. Collagen also breaks down causing the skin to thing and sag, making cellulite more visible.
Do genetics play a role?
Absolutely, and probably more so than lifestyle. Women are much more vulnerable than men, and certain women are more predisposed than others. For example those with paler skin tones are more likely to experience it than those with darker skin, and if your mother or grandmother have it - it’s more likely that you will too.
What can I do to tackle cellulite?
Fighting and preventing cellulite is best done by optimising microcirculation with correct application of anti-cellulite treatments.
The NUXE Body-Contouring Oil has been formulated especially to reduce the appearance of stubborn cellulite and dimples. Enriched with 10 essential oils including blue everlasting flower oil, it stimulates water elimination to unlock bloated tissue. It’s this which can cause the orange peel effect on the skin. Simultaneously, its ingredients of sesame, macadamia and hazelnut oils help to facilitate massage and are combined with cocoa extract to activate the breakdown and release of stored fat.
Apply the body contouring oil daily by vigorously massaging into the affected area in circular motions - this will help to stimulate circulation, keeping those skin fibres healthy. Using grasp-pressing motions will also help to release unsightly and uneven fat.
Tackle thin and sagging skin which can make cellulite more visible with the NUXE Firming Body Cream. It contains soothing, softening and antioxidant almond and orange blossom to immediately tone and firm the skin. Apply in circular motions to any areas prone to slackening such as the thighs, stomach, chest and arms.
Will making adjustments to my lifestyle help?
As cellulite isn’t caused by excess fat, weight loss isn’t likely to help - but certain exercise can, although it’s important to note than even the most dedicated of gym bunnies can still suffer from cellulite. Try movements such as squats or lunges that use muscles in the thighs and glutes, as this will promote circulation in those areas. Toning and strengthening muscle can also lead to a smoother looking appearance of the skin. Having enough water is very important for flushing out toxin build up, so make sure you’re loading up on H2O too.
