Sun Protection 101

Temperatures are hotting up and summer is well on its way; and whilst it brings with it the time to bask on the beach, lounge in the park and dine out in the garden, it also increases our exposure to seriously harmful UV rays. 

Getting our fix of Vitamin D may have undeniable benefits however prolonged time in the sun can have serious and irreversible effects on our skin. These range from the initial appearance of sunburn to long term cellular damage, early wrinkling and age spots. Even sun damage sustained in our early teens can have a profound effect on early ageing and the development of serious skin cancers later in life. So make sure you and the others around you are staying well and truly protected this summer with our expert advice.

Limit your time in the sun…

It might be the basics of sun protection, but it’s so important. The sun is at its strongest between the hours of 10am and 4pm so avoid staying out for long periods during these times. Practice the shadow rule - if your shadow is shorter than you, rays are at their most harmful so it’s time to seek some shade. 

There’s no need to spend hours in the shade to build an incredible tan either. Taking breaks from the sun has been shown to give a longer-lasting tan and if you use the right sun cream or tanning oil you can easily intensify the shade of your skin. Choose the right SPF…

Wearing sun cream is all well and good, but if it’s not delivering the right levels of protection it’s of almost zero benefit. Use a ‘broad spectrum’ SPF which protects against both UVB and UVA rays such as one from our NUXE Sun range. 

UVB rays are responsible for what’s initially considered superficial sunburn on the top layers of your skin. However over time, UV rays can cause immunosuppression, a diminution of the immune response to damaged skin cells. This can lead to the development of serious skin cancers, such as carcinoma and melanoma. 

UVA rays penetrate deeper into the dermis and cause what’s known as ‘photo ageing’; premature ageing of the skin where it becomes thick, yellowish, lacks elasticity and the appearance of wrinkles and pigmentation become more advanced. Our sun creams includes a complex combination of rice and rosemary extracts, botanical precursor of DNA and Vitamin E which work together to protect against the severe effects of premature photo ageing.

Whilst it’s important to wear some level of sun protection at all times of year, up the ante during summer by opting for a higher strength. You should be using SPF 30 or higher, such as our NUXE Sun Melting Spray high protection SPF50, if you have a fairer skin tone in a low sun intensity. SPF20 would be ideal for a darker skin tone: NUXE Sun Milky Spray medium protection SPF20 protects skin from premature ageing and helps achieve the perfect tan. In addition, use an extra strength facial sun cream of SPF 50, such as our Melting Cream high protection SPF50, as your face is most prone to premature ageing. 

Keep your skin moisturised and protect it from overheating...

Whilst protecting our skin against dangerous rays is incredibly important, there are other aggressors we need to watch out for. Dehydration and overheating all have the potential to harm our skin when we spend long periods in the sun. Apply liberally and stay topped up…

Sun cream is far more effective once it’s been absorbed into the skin. Apply at least a small shot glass equivalent on the face 30 minutes before venturing out into the sun. Reapply every couple of hours and even more often if swimming, sweating or towelling. Be mindful of your more vulnerable areas such as your face and neck and take particular care to cover moles that require extra sun protection


Once you’ve left the sun…

If you’ve spent even as little as half an hour catching some rays, chances are you’re already dehydrated. This not only puts us at risk of sun stroke, but leaves our complexion dull and drawn-out and long-term, further increases the chances of early-ageing. Hydrate from the inside first by lapping up lots of water, then look to products like a nourishing after sun to put deep moisture back into the skin.
