You’ve probably known the basics of a skincare routine nearly as long as you’ve known your 5 times table, take your makeup off before bed with a cleanser, close those pores with a toner and add some rehydration with a moisturiser. But what about facial serum? This commonly-overlooked fourth member of the skincare family is just as, if not more essential for achieving beautiful, youthful skin. But with so many varieties on the market, serums can be a source of great confusion and overwhelm. Let NUXE help you understand what they are, how to use them and how to pick the perfect one for your skin type.
What are facial serums?
A serum is a lightweight skincare product, often with a thin, gel or liquid-based texture which offers targeted care for specific skin concerns such as wrinkles, dehydration, dark spots and dullness. Although facial serums often have hydrating properties, they aren’t thick like a moisturiser which allows their higher concentration of active ingredients to penetrate the epidermis more easily.
When should they be used?
Serum should be applied after cleansing and toning, before moisturiser. This is because they’re designed to target the deeper layers of the skin, whilst moisturiser focuses on the more superficial layers. In fact using a serum helps your moisturiser and other skincare to work harder, by locking in additional hydration - think of it as the green juice your diet or protein shake to your workout.
Which serum is best for my skin type?
A serum works best when it’s chosen based on your skin’s needs, whether it’s for anti-wrinkle, brightening or moisturising purposes. NUXE have a range of formulas, tailored to specific skin types and concerns:
For dry skin - A hydrating facial serum is highly effective at injecting long-lasting moisture into the skin, making it an essential product for dry skin types. The Crème fraîche® de beauté Moisturising Serum uses a combination of nourishing plant milks and hyaluronic acid to intensely hydrate the skin. It also protects against the effects of pollution which can cause early ageing of the skin, leading to subsequent dryness.
For dull, tired skin - Inject some youthful radiance back into the skin with the Nuxellence Day and Night Anti-Ageing Serums. Holding 10 patents developed by NUXE with Passion Flower and Hyaluronic acid, they target the core of skin cells to help them maintain their optimum energy levels for a brighter, younger complexion. They also contain pigment correctors to help illuminate the skin, giving it a youthful glow.
For wrinkles - If you’re over the age of 40 and seeing more significant lines and wrinkles starting to develop, opt for a targeted anti-ageing serum to help recharge and re-plump the skin. The NUXE Merveillance Anti-Wrinkle Serum with Daylily Oléoactif® helps to even wrinkles and combat loss of tone. It visibly smooths and lifts the skin for up to 8 hours following, plus lessens the depth of wrinkles after continued use.
For mature skin - For those over the age of 50 and experiencing significant ageing of the skin including lines, loss of density and radiance, choose the Nuxuriance Ultra Anti-Ageing Serum which offers universal anti-ageing treatment. The formula contains innovative Bougainvillea Bi-Floral Cells developed by NUXE to regenerate and even the complexion. It helps to give radiance and youth to the skin, as well as lift the facial contours.
How should I apply serum?
Pump your chosen serum two to three times to obtain enough product for the entire face and neck. Gently warm the product between the tips of your fingers before applying to the face, starting in the centre and smoothing outwards and upwards.
