How your environment might be affecting your skin

When it comes to looking after our skin, we tend to be mostly concerned about internal factors; whether it’s our genetic skin-type, general health, or diet. Whilst all of these things are absolutely valid, have you ever considered that your skin issues might be more about what’s going on outside rather than in? Our environment is incredibly key to the health of our skin - external aggressors such as pollution, sun light, wind and even water quality can impact both its short and long-term appearance. Whilst these circumstances are generally outside our control, in recognising them we can begin to protect our skin from their negative effects. Follow our guide to understand how.

If you live in an urban environment...
Any city-dwellers will be incredibly vulnerable to pollution - the negatives of which are becoming increasingly apparent. Pollution triggers the formation of free radicals; unstable electrons which can damage the skin cells by destroying healthy molecules. Free radicals are a key cause of early ageing, they can dehydrate the skin and slow down the production of collagen leading to sagging skin, wrinkles and brown spots.

It’s important for any urbanite to seek out a dedicated anti-pollution skincare solution. The NUXE Creme Prodigieuse Boost range has been especially formulated to fight the negative effects of an urban environment. Each of the five products are formulated with anti-pollution jasmine flower complex to support antioxidant mechanisms and protect against free radicals. They also help to keep the skin young by using calendula flower and cellular sugar to support collagen-production and skin-cell function. Try the anti-pollution Multi-Correction Gel and Silky Creams for daily protection or apply the Night Recovery Oil Balm to give the skin a repairing treat overnight.

If you’re a sun-seeker…
Whether you’re lucky enough to live by the beach, in the countryside or in the city - everyone is vulnerable to skin damage from sun exposure, even during the winter months. Harmful UVB rays not only cause superficial sunburn, UVA rays infiltrate deeply into the skin causing early ageing, or ‘photo ageing’ later in life. Photo ageing can reveal itself in deeper wrinkles, changes in pigmentation, loss of elasticity and brown spots.

We should be applying a daily sun protection year-round to fight the effects of both UVA and UVB rays. The NUXE Sun Facial Sun Protection comes in SPF 30 or 50 and provides broad spectrum protection with additional ingredients to support and protect the skin cells. Water hyacinth strengthens the skin’s barrier to keep the skin hydrated, whilst kau pe flower soothes the skin to prevent overheating. Botanical extracts and Vitamin E give further sun protection by repairing the skin cells to prevent early ageing.

If you live in a high-wind environment…
Whilst a gentle sea breeze on your face might feel pleasant, wind can be particularly harsh and abrasive on the skin. Continuous exposure weakens the skin’s protective barrier, resulting in dry, tight and chapped skin.

It’s incredibly important to keep wind-exposed skin constantly nourished and moisturised. NUXE Reve de Miel Nourishing Face Creams are the perfect moisturisers for skin that’s become dehydrated and irritated from windy environments. Packed with skin-comforting honey and precious oils, they restore the lipids that help to strengthen the skin’s protective barrier and soothe redness. For any seriously dry and chapped areas, apply the Reve de Miel Super Balm to repair the skin and give relief to irritation.

If you live in a hard water area…
Many of us will find ourselves in hard water areas which is further bad news for our skin. Hard water contains alkaline minerals and can cause significant dehydration and irritation. Such minerals are often very difficult to remove which can also compromise the skin’s protective barrier, particularly for dry skin types.

To ensure you don’t fall victim to the effects of hard water, consider a more thorough double-cleansing routine to remove any stubborn minerals. Be careful however to use a combination of gentle cleansing products such as a micellar cleansing water or cream based cleanser like the ones in our Rose Petals Range. These will effectively cleanse but also help to soothe and hydrate the skin.
